Why Healthcare Systems Are Replacing Workstations on Wheels

Healthcare organizations are moving beyond workstations on wheels by embracing mobile technology that puts clinical information and tools directly in the hands of caregivers, helping streamline workflows and create more time for patient care.

For years, the workstation on wheels has been a familiar part of the healthcare environment. It gave clinicians access to computers and patient information at the bedside, but it also introduced a new challenge: moving the technology from one patient to the next.

Today, healthcare systems are taking a different approach. Instead of bringing a workstation to the patient, many are putting mobile technology directly into the hands of clinicians.

That shift is changing the way care teams access information, document care and interact with patients.

From the Hallway to the Bedside

Mobile devices can give nurses and other clinicians immediate access to the information they need without requiring them to find, move or share a workstation.

With the right mobile solution, a nurse can review patient information, document care, communicate with the care team and complete other clinical tasks right at the bedside. That means less time spent moving between patients and technology, and more time focused on the patient.

The impact goes beyond convenience. When technology fits naturally into a clinical workflow, it can help eliminate unnecessary steps and make information available when and where it matters most.

Connecting Mobility to the EHR

The real value of mobile healthcare technology isn’t the device itself. It’s what happens when that device becomes part of the broader clinical workflow.

Solutions such as Zebra’s Epic Rover integration allow healthcare organizations to connect mobile devices with the Epic electronic health record environment. This gives clinicians a more direct way to interact with patient information and clinical workflows while they are providing care.

Rather than creating another technology layer for clinicians to manage, mobile integration can bring essential tools into a workflow they are already performing.

That distinction matters. Healthcare technology should work around the way clinicians care for patients, not force clinicians to work around the technology.

Better Workflows Can Mean Better Care

Every unnecessary step in a clinical workflow takes time. Finding a workstation, logging in, locating the right patient record or walking back to a computer may seem insignificant on its own. Across hundreds or thousands of interactions, those moments add up.

Mobile technology can help reduce that friction.

When clinicians have access to the information and tools they need at the point of care, they can spend less time managing technology and more time interacting with patients. Documentation can happen closer to the moment care is delivered. Information can be accessed more efficiently. Communication can become more immediate.

The goal isn’t simply to make healthcare more mobile. It’s to make it more connected, efficient and responsive.

The Workstation Is Changing

Replacing workstations on wheels doesn’t mean abandoning technology at the bedside. It means rethinking how that technology gets there.

For many healthcare organizations, the future of clinical mobility will involve smaller, more flexible devices that integrate into existing systems and workflows. The technology becomes less noticeable because it is no longer something clinicians have to work around.

That’s where thoughtful implementation matters.

Choosing the right devices is only part of the equation. Healthcare organizations also need to consider connectivity, security, device management, application integration, charging, support and the realities of how clinicians work throughout the day.

At SK&T, we believe technology should have a purpose. Our role is to help healthcare organizations connect people, technology and workflows in ways that create meaningful results.

Because the best technology isn’t the technology that gets noticed.

It’s the technology that helps clinicians do their jobs better and gives them more time to focus on their patients.
